Every Death In My Hero Academia (2024)

My Hero Academia is packed with terrific action scenes. However, despite all the fighting, surprisingly few characters got themselves killed in the main story. My Hero Academia has generous plot armor for the heroes and villains alike, since pro heroes are supposed to capture villains and the heroes use the power of hope and friendship to survive anything the villains can throw at them. Still, some fatalities are inevitable, and a handful of characters have died on-screen in the My Hero Academia anime.

The rarity and emotional impact of these My Hero Academia deaths made those scenes all the more tragic and memorable, and some deaths felt like a turning point for the story or for certain characters. Protagonist Izuku Midoriya/Deku learned a grim lesson: that being a pro hero means risking one's own life and seeing other brave heroes perish in the line of duty. At this point in time, fans are already asking the question: "Who dies in MHA?"

Updated on June 6, 2024, by Ajay Aravind: My Hero Academia protects its characters like most Shonen series do, although some of them eventually lose their plot armor. Nobody likes to see their favorite characters die, unless maybe they're completely irredeemable. Death is a part of life, and these My Hero Academia deaths went on to impact the narrative in different ways. As such, we've updated this list with some more relevant information.

The Origins of Villains in MHA, Explained

In My Hero Academia's world, Pro-Heroes are mainstream heroes with the support of nations, and as such villains, but what defines the difference?

In the first three seasons of My Hero Academia, no major characters were killed on-screen, either hero or villain. The My Hero Academia anime had a bright and vaguely naive tone at first, probably to represent Deku's ignorance about how brutal and painful hero life can be. The anime gradually grew darker as the reality set in — and by Season 4, people started dying.

The masked villain Overhaul was the first major character to be seen killing someone when he first approached the League of Villains. As a display of force, Overhaul activated his Quirk against Magne when she charged at him. Before the League could even react, they saw their beloved comrade's upper body explode into a fine mist. Given the resulting outrage, Mr. Compress also lost an arm to Overhaul before the bloody scuffle was finally over.

Deku managed to defeat Overhaul with immense difficulty, circumventing the fatal prediction that Sir Nighteye had foreseen. However, the League of Villains decided to waylay the prison ambulance taking Overhaul away, forcing Sand Hero: Snatch to leap into the fray. Despite being a minor character, Snatch proved that he's as courageous as the best of them. Unfortunately, he was not nearly strong enough to battle these particular opponents.

Although he temporarily managed to gain control of the situation, Dabi attacked Snatch with his terrifying Blueflame Quirk. Mr. Compress then uses his Compress Quirk to seal Snatch, allowing Dabi to incinerate the Pro Hero into nothing. Snatch's death wasn't exactly a major event, but it certainly showed that the villains have very little compassion to offer.

The suit-wearing pro hero Sir Nighteye made his debut in My Hero Academia's fourth season, and he died not long after that. He had once been All Might's sidekick and later went on to become a proper hero himself. Nighteye eventually accepted Deku as an intern, although he wasn't convinced that the student was a worthy successor to All Might. Thankfully, this changed before his death.

Nighteye's last mission was leading the raid on Overhaul's hideout, along with Deku and Mirio Togata. Tragically, Sir Nighteye suffered a mortal injury during the battle, and it was too late to save him. Hospital treatment only bought Sir Nighteye enough time to bid a fond farewell to Deku and Mirio, giving them inspiring parting words before dying happy. Deku and Mirio weren't so happy, though — both the students and All Might were reduced to tears.

10 Most Morally Gray Decisions in My Hero Academia

My Hero Academia may be about heroes and villains, but what makes the shonen anime so beloved is its fearlessness in tackling morally gray stories.

At the very end of My Hero Academia's fourth anime season, the new #1 Pro Hero Endeavor had to prove to everyone that he was worthy of being the top hero. A new and incredibly deadly Nomu, known simply as Hood, arrived and quickly gained the upper hand when it attacked Endeavor and Hawks. Endeavor struggled while Hawks evacuated all the civilians, and for a while, all seemed lost.

The High-End Nomu could quickly regenerate from even the most powerful flame attacks and deliver punches with devastating force. At one point, it appeared that even the strongest hero was no match for the villain. After receiving a boost from Hawks' Fierce Wings Quirk, however, the situation began to change. Endeavor ultimately pushed himself to go Plus Ultra and performed a devastating flame strike that incinerated Hood, ending its rampage for good while restoring hope in the process.

Season 5 ushered in the My Villain Academia arc, where the strongest League of Villains members took center stage as antiheroes. First, Tomura Shigaraki trained against Gigantomachia, and then his team met the Meta Liberation Army's members in a large town. There, the two sides came to blows, and blood was spilled. Curious, also known as Chitose Kizuki, decided to try her luck against Himiko Toga.

On the other hand, Himiko Toga was desperate to escape Curious and her explosive powers, but nothing seemed to work. Then something incredible happened when she morphed into Ochaco Uraraka. Himiko could suddenly use Ochaco's Zero-Gravity Quirk, throwing Curious high into the air before slamming her back down with fatal results. From that point on, Himiko could use the Quirks of the people whom she copied.

Tomura Shigaraki was born as Tenko Shimura, the grandson of the 7th wielder of One For All, Nana Shimura. In Episode 111's flashback, things were tense for the Shimuras because Kotaro, Tenko's father, bitterly resented his late mother and the entire concept of pro heroes. On the other hand, Tenko admired them, infuriating his dad. Hana, Tenko's sister, showed him a picture of their grandma, which threw Kotaro into a blind rage.

He left Tenko outside for punishment, which was when the deadly Decay Quirk activated. No one was prepared for the outcome, perhaps except the malevolent All For One. In that flashback, My Hero Academia fans saw Tenko murder his sister Hana by accident, which made him spiral out of control with grief and shock. That said, Tenko's first victim was the family pet, a scene that's just as horrifying as any other death in the series.

My Hero Academia: 15 Weakest Quirks (So Far)

On My Hero Academia, there are just some quirks that will always appear weak, no matter how they're compensated.

Episode 111's carnage didn't end with the accidental deaths of Hana Shimura and the family dog. Tenko Shimura's mind and Quirk both went out of control, and he ended up killing his mother as well as his maternal grandparents. He even destroyed the family house in the process. Tenko was horrified by the deaths of his beloved family members, but there was one notable exception.

Tenko deliberately used Decay to kill his father Kotaro, whom he had deeply resented for a long time. He was fed up with his father's physical and verbal abuse regarding pro heroes, so he took pleasure in getting the last laugh as he killed Kotaro by activating Decay on his own father's face. At that moment, Tenko went from a tragic victim of his own Quirk to a supervillain in the making. That said, Tenko might have never become Tomura if it had not been for All For One plotting in the shadows.

By Season 6, the bloodletting in My Hero Academia reached incredible new heights, and several major characters would either lose their lives or become grievously injured. On the villains' side, the most notable casualty was Twice, the man who could copy himself endlessly with the Sad Man's Parade technique. The double agent Hawks ambushed Twice and attacked him without mercy.

This left Twice feeling shocked, angry, and betrayed, as he had begun considering Hawks to be one of his close friends. Despite Dabi's attempts to save Twice, Hawks refused to let go of this chance. It was incredibly rare for pro heroes to fight with the intent to kill, and in the eyes of some fans, Hawks was more of a villain in that scene than Twice was. Still, Hawks triumphed, stabbing Twice to death with his sharp feather-blade to finish the job.

The pro heroes also suffered serious casualties during the battle between the heroes and the massive Paranormal Liberation Front. A handful of pro heroes like Eraser Head, Endeavor, and Mirko stormed Jakku General Hospital and nearly captured Tomura Shigaraki, defeating some Nomu along the way. While Mirko tried to stop Tomura's "operation" by destroying his tank, a small burst of electricity jumpstarted the villain's heart. When Tomura awakened, he leaped right into action.

The hero X-Less was the first casualty, and he was helpless as Tomura casually destroyed him with Decay, now vastly more powerful than before. Subsequently, Tomura swiped X-Less' red cape and put it on, giving him the first piece of his new villain costume. My Hero Academia fans never got to know X-Less, but it was still horrifying to watch him get taken out like that.

10 My Hero Academia Fights That Don't Live Up to the Hype

My Hero Academia is home to many spectacular fights, but more than a few spectacularly fail to deliver the hype that it promises

In the same episode where X-Less lost his life, another pro hero died in the line of duty fighting the Paranormal Liberation Front. The minor hero Crust also briefly took center stage while fighting a High-End Nomu and other threats, dealing some impressive damage against the villains. This wasn't surprising, given that he was the #6 hero, but his streak of success wouldn't last very long.

Crust gave his life to make sure Eraser Head could escape the crumbling ruins of the hospital when Tomura destroyed it. Eraser Head indeed survived, but it was tough watching a high-ranked hero like Crust die in the process. It was even more heartbreaking to see Crust decay away with a thumbs up and smile on his face — showing that he was happy to sacrifice his life for his comrade.

After being hit by large debris released by Mr. Compress, she was attacked by a group of PLF members.

Midnight spoke to Momo Yaoyorozu over the comm and gave her some encouraging words, putting her faith in Momo and the others to survive and defeat the villains once and for all. Momo was alarmed when Midnight's voice was cut off. Fans never got to see the events directly leading to her death, as the whole sequence occurred off-screen. Momo and her classmates would soon find Midnight's body, much to their horror.

When , she was described as "the strongest woman in the world." Although impressively vast, her physical power couldn't compare to that of All Might. Thankfully, Star & Stripe's raw strength was just one aspect of her Quirk. With New Order, the American pro hero could effectively rewrite the laws of physics by declaring certain rules. As such, she used her Quirk to manifest a massive air clone that dealt considerable damage to Tomura/AFO.

Desperate to defeat the villain using a single movie, Star & Stripe used Tiamat missiles to generate a colossal explosion with Tomura/AFO at the epicenter. That being said, a side-character shouldn't be able to kill the main antagonist no matter their power. Tomura/AFO survived the attack and managed to touch Star & Stripe's face. Unable to stop the effects of Decay, she began to disintegrate. However, Star & Stripe had made a final rule that New Order would "rebel against other Quirks." Despite her death, the American hero ensured that the villain would be a little weaker than before.
